We have had ours for 8 years and has been working perfectly for us. 5 kids and three dogs with the kids going opening the sliding glass all the time and the dogs go in an out all day long and it keeps working. The flap has seen a lot of beating from our puggle. When we put the door down to keep them out for a while, she will paw at it for hours and it has never torn or come off. I can’t saw enough good about our petsafe door! Now one of my kids have thrown the plastic insert door away accidentally so I’m hoping to find a replacement for the insert.
I bought this about 6 weeks ago. It took the puppies less than an hour to use. In a week no more acidents in the house! Easy to install. Son brought his dog over and in minutes from following puppies he learned. No more worries about rusging home to let the pups out!
Worked well in snowy winters and hot summers in MN
I've had this patio door insert for about 10 years. I live in Minn. so with some creativity I made it work year round. I have a very anxious/separation anxiety Weimaraner who cannot be kenneled and will have accidents in the house as soon as we leave, so having this dog door on our raised deck gave him the ability to go out and do his business. First of all, we caulked around the entire outside of the door. On the inside I pushed insulating foam for AC units into the frame between the existing patio door and the pet door. During the winter we push a wooden dog house against the patio door with an opening cut for the dog to walk into it directly from the dog door and then he exits just a couple steps out the original door on the side of the doghouse. This helps with wind and snowstorms from blowing into the house. Even in the summer if there is a storm brewing, I will push the doghouse up to the door to protect against rain blowing into the house. I keep a rubber backed rug inside the house so if any rain comes into the house from the dog door it is contained. This door was a lifesaver and I don't think we would have been able to keep our dog if it wasn't for this patio panel.
The door came on scheduled date and the package was intact. The ease of installation is wonderful, fit superb. It has not affected the use of the sliding glass door at all. We installed the door back in April and it works beautifully.
I certainly would not recommend this product for use in severe winter weather , but in moderate weather like we have here in Portland most of the yeat, it performed very well.
I purchased the "XL" size for my 70LB black lab and 100LB doberman.
Our lab goes in and out no problem, but our Doberman is hesitant every time.
The step over is too large while the width is too small. Our Doberman is in top shape and has to crunch her back down in order to barely fit her physique through. She bangs against it going in and out.
My suggestion is to make the "step over" lower while making the width bigger. On top of this, both dogs like to look out before stepping through, making the "darkened plastic" flap a nuisance. I had to remove it in order for them to get used to it. I believe a see through plastic would benefit more.
This current "XL" version is not suited for Doberman, and there's no way a St. Bernard or Great Dane could fit through it either.
I bought the patio panel that door and just installed it today. The door looks of good quality and it was relatively easy to install. My biggest pet peeve is all of the screws and brackets are silver. Or a metal color. I bought a white door and I thought or at least I thought it was common sense for the screws to come white as well. I'll keep it because it does serve it's purpose but I really wish the brackets and the screws or white to match the door so they do not stand out as a do right now.
i replaced my 7year old door with this new one. the flap magnet doesnt hold. the least amount of breeze has the flap blowing. i would put the old one back if i could find the replacement flap. having to put the panel to close door defeats the purpose of the door.
Bought this door so I wouldn't have to modify an outdoor wall. The door itself is fine as long as you know it's single-pane glass going in. The flap is a joke however. Isn't suitable for any climate unless it's 70*f outside with no wind or bugs. The magnet doesn't seal on the bottom of the flap >75% of the time, and when it does catch the magnet it is still an awful seal on the sides. I wasn't expecting a hermetically sealed dog door, but I can't imagine how anyone uses this for a patio door. Extremely disappointed. I would upgrade to the Extreme Weather pet door but it is not compatible with this product.
